Production, demand and export of Basmati Rice from India

 


India is the world's leading producer of Basmati rice and its share in the total global production is about 55% as there are limited basmati producing regions in the world. Demand for basmati is increasing nowadays not only in India but also in major countries like Japan, USA, Germany and others. A variety of Export promotions have been launched by the Indian Government to boost export of basmati rice.

Production of basmati rice in India

India is one of the largest basmati rice exporters in the world. The total production of basmati rice is estimated at 4.1 million tonnes and is expected to reach 5 million tonnes by 2018-19. A report by MarketResearchFuture.com titled ‘India Basmati Rice Market Research Report - Forecast to 2023’, states that the market for India Basmati Rice will grow at a CAGR of 8.48%, and the yield rate is expected to increase from approximately 2,500 kg/ha in 2017 to 3045 kg/ha by 2023.

The average paddy yield rate in India has shown a positive trend from approximately 1,900 kg/ha in 2008 to 2,500 kg/ha in 2017 owing to improved pest resistance, drought tolerance, and high nutrient use efficiency, which led to an increase in demand for basmati rice around the world.

Global demand for  Basmati rice

Global demand for Basmati rice has increased tremendously in recent years. Even though India and Pakistan are the major producers and exporters of Basmati rice, other countries like the United States, Thailand, Nepal, Iran and Bhutan have also gained a significant position in the global market.

India is the largest producer of basmati rice in the world with about 65% share of global production. Indian basmati rice accounts for about 50-60% of world trade. In terms of volume and value, India dominates basmati exports. India has around 30% share in global basmati trade by volume and 50% share by value.

Export of Basmati rice from India

India's online basmati rice exports are likely to touch Rs. 20,000 crore (US$ 2.86 billion) by the end of March 2018, according to a senior official of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

The APEDA has been conducting several campaigns to increase awareness among farmers and exporters on exporting good quality basmati rice and has introduced a certification scheme for it.

According to APEDA, Indian Basmati Rice is exported to more than 150 countries including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Singapore, Malaysia, Iraq, Iran, and other countries of Europe and America.
