Global Market Outlook for Sugar Export

 


The global market of sugar reached a volume of 193.2 Million tons in 2020. Sugar is used across the world for innumerable food. In addition to offering a sweet taste, sugar performs different other functions in the food industry.  It is used for fast food, candy, baked products, convenience foods etc. Sugar is one of the most important agri commodities in the world, which is widely consumed by people across the world.

Top Sugar export countries that had a larger value of trade in 2019 were Brazil ($5.32B), Thailand ($3.04B), India ($1.45B), Australia ($985M) and Mexico ($839M). According to the IMARC (International Mining and Resources Conference) group, the global sugar market will continue to grow during the forecast period 2021-2026.

Indian Sugar Export

According to ISMA (Indian Sugar Mills Association), during October-December 2021, Indian sugar exports jumped nearly 17 lakh tonnes on higher demand from the international market.

According to AISTA (All India Sugar Trade Association) mills exported a total of 2,76,676 tonnes of bulk sugar from October-November in 2021. In 2021, India’s maximum export was to the UAE at 1.08 lakh tonnes, followed by Bangladesh at 52,330 tonnes, Somalia at Rs 24,960 tonnes and Iran at Rs 22,646 tonnes.

Production of Sugarcane in India

India is the second largest producer of Sugar after Brazil. In 2020, sugarcane production in India was 370 million tonnes. India produces 300-350 million tonnes cane, 20-22 million tonnes white sugar, and 6-8 million tonnes khandasri& jaggery to attain domestic consumption demand.

Sugarcane is produced in large amounts in some states of India. In 1961, Sugarcane production was estimated to be about 110 million tonnes, which increased to 405 million tonnes in 2019. Sugar industry is very big in India because all the people from different states are associated with this industry. In India, the top ten sugarcane producing states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Uttar Pradesh produces a large amount of sugarcane in the country. According to NFCSFL (National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited), during the 2021-22 marketing session, total production is estimated at 30.90 lakh tonnes.

Rising demand for sugar has spiked the global sugar market especially in Asia and in the Middle east. Sugar market is mainly determined by growing sugar prices, consumption patterns of ready-to-eat products and beverages. Sugar demand has increased in the world with modernization and changing dietary habits. Here is the list of top 5 sugar importing countries worldwide during 2020-2021:-

      Indonesia- During 2020-21, it has emerged as the largest sugar importing country with volume 5.2 million metric tons. In 2020, the total value of sugar imports in Indonesia was estimated to be approximately 1.94 billion U.S dollars.  Thailand, Brazil and Australia were the biggest exporter of sugar to Indonesia.

      China- It’s again an Asian country, which imports sugar from other countries.China is the second largest sugar importing country because of its largest population demand. It imported 4.9 MMT during 2020-21 in terms of volume. China imported sugar mainly from Southeast Asia, South America and India.

      United States- The United States does not produce as much sugar. However, the American beverages industry totally relies on imports of sugar to fulfill consumers demand. During 2020-21, the US imported 4.9 MMT sugar in terms of volume.

      Bangladesh- During 2020-21, Bangladesh imported 2.45 MMT sugar. Bangladesh mostly imported sugar from Brazil and India.

      Algeria- Algeria is the 5th largest sugar importing country in the world with a volume of 2.4 MMT during 2020-21. Algeria imports most of its sugar from brazil. Algeria's sugar market is expected to expand in the coming years.

India also imports sugar from other countries. During 2020, India’s sugar import from Brazil was US$622.89 Million. India has always been there in the international market for Import-export. India has imported 6.596 million tonnes of sugar in the last 15 years and it has exported 4.496 million tonnes of sugar.
