Prospects of Spices Exports to Egypt from India

 


Spices feature among the most traded agricultural commodities in the world today. It is but natural that India, which is the world’s leading producer of spices, would be holding a position of prominence in this trade. The export of spices and condiments feature significantly in the total agricultural exports from the country. As per 2017-18 estimates, India exported approximately 10.28 lakh tonnes of total spices which were around 7.98 % share of total exports.

The Indian spices market has been growing at a CAGR of 15% during 2015-2020, a trend that is expected to continue in the period 2021-26. The growing interest in innovative flavors, significant growth in the food processing industry, and availability of high-quality spices without synthetic additives are augmenting the demand for natural and organic spices from India.

Trade between India and Egypt

During the period 2018-19, India was the 9th largest trading partner of Egypt and the 8th largest export destination. India and Egypt are two of the oldest civilizations in the world; both countries have had a history of cooperation since ancient times which continues even today. Egypt is a prominent trading partner from Africa. Bilateral trade has been growing and facilitated through the India-Egypt Bilateral Trade Agreement, which has been in operation since March 1978.

Egypt has a large market from fenugreek from India. Spices from India are high in demand due to their distinct aroma and flavor. The future of the export of other major spices such as black pepper, cardamom, and turmeric also have bright prospects, given the trade competitiveness of India as a major producer and supplier of these commodities.

Spice market in Egypt

In addition to the regular spices such as black pepper, salt, chili pepper, there are a few other spices that are available in most kitchens in Egypt. These are cumin, fresh green coriander, dried coriander seeds, and bay leaf. The cuisine of the country relies heavily on these condiments, and therefore there is a growing demand for the same. Many consumers from the country are wanting to buy Indian spices online.

India can do well by exploring the market of Egypt with the Indian government creating policies that are aimed at enhancing productivity and bringing down the per-unit cost of production of spices.
